Color me surprised

So the city's Halloween plan worked really well. Hats off to all involved.

They had State Street lit up so bright it looked like you were in Times Square. No, I wasn't out partying with the college kids on Saturday. I was downtown on Friday night for dinner and the Capitol Steps show. Very funny and I highly recommend it if you ever get a chance. Where else can you see Vice President Dick Cheney combined with Sir Mix A Lot?

It worked well? There still were hundreds of kids arrested, hundreds of police had to be there (and ticket sales could not have covered that cost, if it again was $800,000 as in past years -- and that was without the fencing, the stages, the bands, etc.).

It worked well for the businesses, as windows weren't broken.

But did it work well for the city and the taxpayer? Really?

It wasn't perfect, but it worked much better than it has in the past. It is progress and that's all you can hope for in one year.
