Leaving to Fight in the War
Lord knows I have been first in line of those who have mocked the JournalSentinel when their writers have been overly artistic. Regardless of the subject matter they can get carried away.
Even the Edit board goes nuts once in awhile. But I liked this lede...
How do you say goodbye when you don't know for certain if you are coming home again? You make nervous little jokes to hide the fact that tears are running down your cheeks. You bump your one son's fist like they do in baseball. You mess up the other son's hair. You whisper "You boys be good now" into both of their ears. Then, you hug them hard and start to cry all over againYou should read on.
Folkbum, Xoff and What's Left will agree, regardless of your opinion of this war...God Bless the USA and God Bless the men and women who put their lives on the line, unflinchingly, for their country and for their commander and chief.
Right?

I know I should just ignore this stupid dig at me but...
Gee Brian, I guess when I sent care packages to my friends in Iraq or held my breath every time they said they were heading up north, it was because I don't support the troops. Give me a break.
How many care packages have you sent there?
Or does just posting about how much we should all love W without question count as much?
this who-can-wax-more john-waynesque business is just one rhetorical technique that has been used to avoid real discussion of public policy.
This kind of thing comes directly out of the republicans' strategy of attacking those who crticize the war or Bush as actually favoring "terrorists" over the well-being of American soldiers or the nation's safety. Like when on Senator responded to Feingold's censure thing by claiming that Feingold was more concerned with freedom for terrorists than with national security.
Anyway -- i never thought I would see a day when "mainstream" officials claim that frank, meaningful debate of national policy is inappropriate and undermines the country.
Jesus H Thinskinned....
I meant what I wrote. We should all be able to agree, partisanship aside, that these men and women who sacrifice so much should be held in high regard.
This was not a dig at you Carrie, or at Bill or Jay. Or at anyone. I never ever said, nor implied anything.
As far as the brave anonymous post...my take was not a rhetorical technique. I tried to convey my feelings. Period. I wasn't trying to comment on anti american leftists who think any act of American military force is aggression. I didn't question anyone's patriotism.
Reread the take again, and lay your obviously guilty conscience aside for a bit.
They nailed you, Brian. Your comment and 'denial' following were pure Richard Nixon.
I was surprsied at the comments following the post. I took Brian's comments exactly how he intended them.
Can't all of us agree that men and women are making a great sacrifce?
I think he's right...some guilty & thin skinned people out there.
Talk about thin skinned. The post sparked a somewhat interesting battery of comments. That's a bad thing?
