Blogosphere Reaction to Milwaukee Tire Slashing Sentencing

I'll keep a running post at the top of the blog.

Here's the reaction so far:

Mary agrees completely.

Eugene Kane compares the sentences in the tire case to the outcome of the Jude beating trial. He misses the distinction between punishments for being found guilty vs. receiving no punishment for being found not guilty. He’d have a point if the officers would have been found guilty and received lesser sentence.

Shark and Sheperd
takes issue with Kane's take.

Liberal Seth questions the judge’s motivation, ignoring the judge’s own answer, which was that he looked at it not merely as a vandalism case, but as a case of infringing on the voting process.

Jenna calls the punishment a slap on the wrist.

Owen is happy.

The Professor schools former Mayor Pratt.

It always amazes me how people who have no idea about the law generally or about a specific case tend to be the most shrill in their opinions.

These folks pleaded to misdemeanors and were given what are, in the context of misdemeanors, pretty stiff sentences.

"A slap on the wrist" is a comment that has no bearing on the issue at hand. If Jenna, whoever that is, thinks that a more severe punishment is appropriate, s/he is talking metaphysics, not law. Which is fine, but an honest commentator would note the difference.

When I wrote my initial post, Brennan's comments were not yet up on the WisPolitics article.

I've since added a follow-up post you can see here...if you're interested.

I say cheese food sandwiches everyday for lunch, while incarcerated. I also hope the jail is not tobacco free (what goes better with a processed cheese food slice on white bread than a cigarette?). I hope they get a shower once a week, so they can truly feel the dirt they have wiped upon themselves.

I know the moment they are released and breathe free air again, rather than accept the error of their ways? They will once again speak out in public, blaming Bush for all of society's ills. Even blaming him for criminals like the despicable rodents they are.
