Do Republicans Hate Milwaukee?

Do Republicans hate Milwaukee?

That's the question posed by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel editorial board.

In an editorial blasting the Assembly Speaker for hindering efforts to stop the city's payments to police officers who are appealing their firing, the paper also brings up former Governor Tommy Thompson's infamous "Stick it to 'em" comment. They see a pattern.

Nothing like taking two separate issues out of context.

The answer to the question of whether Republicans hate Milwaukee is an emphatic 'No.'

But it's hard to blame the Journal Sentinel editorial board for wondering. Let's cut them some slack. O. Ricardo Pimentel, the editorial page editor of the Journal Sentinel, has been in the city less than two years.

So, even though it is his job to know, he apparently doesn't realize that Republicans have been the primary champions for School Choice in Milwaukee and every single state investment in the city in the past 12 years could not have been possible without the votes of Republican legislators.

I guess he also doesn't understand just how many Republicans his flippant comment insults?

There are a lot of us here in Milwaukee and the Milwaukee area.

  • President Bush received 75,746 votes from city residents last year, 180,287 in Milwaukee County.
  • Rick Graber, the Republican Party of Wisconsin chairman, works at one of the city's largest law firms.
  • Our county executive, Scott Walker, is a Republican and a half dozen fellow GOPers are considering running for his post if his run for governor is successful.
  • Hundreds of thousands of Republicans work in the city, every day.
  • Thousands of Republicans, like myself, choose to locate our businesses here.
  • Many of the aforementioned Republicans who invest their time, talent and treasure in the city are (currently) subscribers to the Journal Sentinel.
With a paper that is so out of touch with the community it covers, is it any wonder its circulation is on such a decline?

Yes, Republican’s do exist in Milwaukee, but you failed to answer the question at hand, “Do Republican’s hate Milwaukee?”
You sited examples from 5-10 years ago that show perhaps they don’t, but what about right now? Just because some GOPers live here, doesn’t mean they don’t hate it.
Why ask the question of yourself if you’re not going to answer it?

I am a Republican and I do hate Milwaukee when the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District dumps crap in the lake. It gets me very very very angry.

someone at JS must have been listening to Sykes again, and they did not want to be left out of the frothing on police pay. how many other jobs exist in Wisconsin where each day you have a chance of being killed? Another question JS editors should ask themselves, where was their indignation and loud voice when the City had to pay $2 million just last year because of racist hiring decisions by then Chief Art Jones...a complete idiot, recruited and hired by David Riemer, Patrick Curley and John Norquist. Curley is now Barretts chief of staff.

I almost hate to interrupt the "me-too" chorus, but as a real conservative -- not a Republican but a conservative who actually believes in balanced budgets, civil liberties, small government and the rule of law -- I don't see how it isn't obvious that the Wisconsin Republican party is taking aim at Milwaukee. 1) Choice costs us taxpayers $1,000 more per student than public education; 2) if one thinks the paying police officer who have broken laws and rules is a good thing, why isn't that policy applied across the state? 3) the official position of the party -- and Milwaukee's county executive -- is for an expansion of I-94 that will remove $200 million from the property tax rolls (including about 80 businesses). That those don't even get into the state party's attempt to disarm police officers from one of their key advantages -- being able to arrest anyone carrying a concealed weapon. I'm a hunter but I'm not stupid and giving everyone the right to carry a gun with little or no check in an urban area is really, really dumb.

Anyway, sorry to interrupt with some common sense. Now back to bashing Milwaukee
