New Guv Race Polling
Even Doyle's top dogs can't spin away these numbers.
Wisconsin Governor: Doyle (D) with Modest Lead
Survey of 500 Likely Voters January 23, 2006
Election 2006 Wisconsin Governor
Jim Doyle (D) 47%
Scott Walker (R) 40%
Election 2006 Wisconsin Governor
Jim Doyle (D) 48%
Mark Green (R)41%
February 7, 2006--In Wisconsin, Democratic Governor Jim Doyle leads two Republicans challenging his reelection bid by single digits.
Doyle leads Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker 47% to 40%. In early December, a Rasmussen Reports election poll showed him leading Walker 48% to 37%.
Doyle leads Congressman Mark Green 48% to 41%, a similar result to our December poll. Then, he led Green 45% to 39%.
Incumbents who poll below 50% early in the campaign season are typically viewed as potentially vulnerable. Doyle certainly qualifies. Four years ago, there was a strong third party challenge and the Governor was elected with just 45% of the vote.
The current governor is viewed favorably by 56% of voters, more than those who favorably view either Walker (44%) or Green (45%). But, with high name recognition, Doyle also has significantly higher unfavorable numbers. In light of the spate of corruption scandals making headlines in the state, we asked respondents several questions about the possible impact on their vote.
About two thirds of Wisconsin voters are following the news of the scandals closely or somewhat closely. Seventy-two percent (72%) say corruption is a problem involving both parties. Democrats and Republicans are more likely to say the other party is most to blame, but 68% of Republicans and 68% of Democrats also point the finger at "both parties."
Although most respondents agree that corruption is a very important (66%) or somewhat important (27%) issue, only about a third say corruption is more important to them than the economy or the war in Iraq.
Fifty percent (50%) of likely voters say Wisconsin is about as corrupt as other states; 13% say it's more corrupt; 28% say it's less corrupt.

Seems like very good numbers for the Walker camp.
Especially when you compare them to the last poll. Walker has improved, Green has declined. Either way, Doyle is in the tank and that is great.
a lot of spin here
Michels received 44% against ultra-liberal Feingold. Neither Green or Walker seem to be approaching the 44% number. Green or Walker have to capture 70% of the undecided to poll even with Doyle.
I live in SE Wisconsin and my preference is clearly Green over Walker. If was in Doyle's camp, I would be happy to run against Walker's record debt financing, budget shortfalls, unfunded pension liabilities and park closures.
Yes, as you said...a LOT of spin there...most of it from the last post.
If I were in Doyle's camp I would NOT want to run against Scott Walker because of his strong record of meaningful spending restraint and holding the line on taxes... Green is a part of the run away spending in Congress.
All that matters here is that Doyle is under 50, and the story doesn't talk about negatives much but if 56% are positives (governor "viewed favorably")that's a pretty large segment that's left that is pretty unimpressed at this late date in his term. And if they think the legislature taking an extra week to act on a heating assistance bill that sends a little more money out - boy are they desperate. They act like it's a 5 alarm fire.
Did anyone notice the date of this poll? It was taken on January 23, the day before the story of Georgia Thompson's indictment hit the papers. Anyone think these numbers will change in the next poll, especially with such large numbers citing corruption as being an important issue?
