So Wisconsin will get a chance to write discrimination against gays into its state constitution in November. Can't wait. Makes me proud.

In the Assembly debate before the vote that was a foregone conclusion, it was a Republican who captured the essence of what's wrong with this picture. The Journal Sentinel reports:
Rep. Gregg Underheim (R-Oshkosh) was the only Republican to vote against the amendment, saying that it was an "anti-constitutional" measure because it singles out a particular group rather than protecting the rights of all citizens.He's exactly right. The constitution exists to protect people's rights, not take them away.
"In virtually no other area do constitutions prohibit private individuals from engaging in an activity," Underheim said. "We are taking a document which has protected people from their government and saying, 'We're changing the character of that document.' "
And lest there be any doubt about what really drives this issue, we had some rare candor from Republicans:

That history has Rick Wiley, executive director of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, confident that the amendment will pass here and at the same time bring Republican voters to the polls to defeat Doyle.
Doyle is facing a challenge from two Republicans, U.S. Rep. Mark Green of Green Bay and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker.
In 2003, Doyle vetoed a bill that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman, prompting backers to seek a constitutional amendment. Doyle said he vetoed it because state law already makes that distinction.
Both the Senate and Assembly passed the amendment last session. With the Assembly action Tuesday, the Legislature gave the measure its required approval by a second consecutive session.
"It's our job to be sure that people go to the polls to vote for the marriage amendment and the Republican candidates for governor," Wiley said. "Not only are they out there in force voting for this amendment, but because Gov. Doyle is vulnerable, you get a two-for-one shot."

I was a resident of Vermont when its Legislature passed that state's civil unions law. Today I am ashamed to be living in a state that is on the precipice of embedding discrimination in its Constitution.
it is really disturbing that homosexuals can stage a full frontal assualt on something as sacred to wisconsinites as marriage, and then use their perverse opinion on the matter to force others to bow to their wishes. they have no constitutional right to destroy a sacred institution for their own purposes. when this is all said and done i would like to ask two questions of all the people who opposed the ban.
do i get to complain that the homosexuals have stepped on my rights? do i get to file a law suit claiming that they have forced their own religion of perversion on me and my family?
because that is exactually what they are doing, forcing there sexual tendencys on everyone else!
“kenoshan” must be very susceptible to the power of persuasion that the gay community possesses. How does the extension of a right to a specific group deprive another group of that right?

In any case, no one is forcing sexual tendencies on anyone. Just like kenoshan, people just want to be left alone to live their lives. Seems it's kenoshan who is forcing his ideals on others.
And, I have yet to see any local conservative bloggers, who profess to be so open-minded, stand up and denounce this desecration of our constitution. Why not? Because they are cowards!
It saddened me to read what Kenoshan had to say. Its closemindedness such as that is the reason there is so much hate in the world. Good christian attitude.

For Kenoshan, how about a constitutional amendment that discriminates against citizens who don't know how to spell correctly? Mean-spirited? Sure. But less so than what this proposes to do. And, Kenoshan, I love how you attempt to turn the tables on gay and lesbian Wisconsinites saying they're lauchning "an assault" when it's the bigot brigade that's pushing this amendment.
